Girls on Fire and FIRST
- Girls on Fire is a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team: Team 5679
- Founded: Late 2014
- First competition season: Recycle Rush in 2015
- Girls on Fire is the only girl-focused FRC team in the Piedmont Triad, and is one of only three girl-focused teams in North Carolina.
- The mission of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology): "to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership"
- Age group: we currently accept members in 8th-12th grades
- Cadence: January to March to conceptualize, design, build, program, modify and test a robot, and compete in qualifying events
- Qualifying competitions are held starting in late February or early March, culminating with the FIRST Championship
Goal
- The goal of Girls on Fire is to empower underrepresented young people in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM)
- Members of the team focus on honing many skills, including:
- Design
- Mechanics, Electronics, and Programming
- Communications (including public speaking and writing)
- Finance and Budgeting
2023-2024 FIRST Crescendo Season - Girls on Fire Planned Events
- FRC District Qualifier - UNC Asheville - Open to Spectators March 16-17th
- FRC District Qualifier - Mecklenburg County - Open to Spectators March 23-24th
- FRC State Championship (If Qualified) - ECU - Open to Spectators April 6-7th
- FRC World Championship (If Qualified) - Houston - April 17-20th
